—–On Saturday September 13, Art Camp the opening of “Last Stop,” an installation of work by stencil artist, PaperMonster and photographer, Steven Sultan. The event is sponsored by CryBaby Art Gallery and will be held at Art Camp on the Asbury Park Boardwalk at 1000 Ocean Ave.
The artists joined forces to create an art installation full of vivid colors, texture, and beauty. PaperMonster’s stencil artwork combines various forms of collage to bring texture and depth to his pieces which focus on emotional snapshots and facial expressions of women. Steven Sultan’s photography captures and dives deeper into the texture which is created within street and subway advertisements as people take an active role in its urban decay. Together, they will take on an “subway station/platform” inspired theme which will bring together street art techniques to create an urban aesthetic packed with emotions of adventure, love and mystery.
The artists opened the doors to their live installation on Saturday, September 6th and invited the public and specifically, local street artists to participate in the event. The grand unveiling of the entire installation on Saturday, September 13th with music and entertainment.
Please join us in Asbury Park for this unique and remarkable event. It will begin at 9p.m. at 1000 Ocean Ave Asbury Park NJ 07712. There is a suggested donation of $10. For more photos of the artists’ work, please visit http://www.papermonster.org and http://www.myspace.com/stevensultanm

TheAsianEconomist.com is happy to announce that it has launch it’s interview section and we are very glad to have our first interview be with a rising stencil artist, PaperMonster. You can check out more of his work at his blog: http://papermonster.wordpress.com.PaperMonster will be our feature Artist for our first issue of The Asian Economist Online Magazine, stay tune for the release date of the Magazine.
The name PaperMonster came from a lot of different parts of my life but one was the huge amount of paper that I consume and the mess that comes with stenciling and later having a final product of a beautiful stencil, but then looking at the area around you and seeing the large amount of tiny paper fragments which are so hard to clean up. The name fits well and at the same time there is this opposition occurring where the name PaperMonster is very strong and you imagine chaos but my work is very focused on beauty and subtleties with loud colors.
When did you start doing stencil and what/who influence you in the beginning?
I started about four years ago doing very ugly stencils at the time when I had little to no skills. I used all of the wrong types of materials and had no concept of negative space. The first stencil involved a cartoon character I used to draw constantly and the second stencil was of my face wearing a respirator mask. The cartoon looked great but my face looked horrible. I would spend days on just one stencil and now I can spend only a couple hours and come out with something incredible. I remember buying my first stencil book “Stencil Graffiti” and it blew my mind. I wanted so desperately to be a famous stencil graffiti artist. Things take time and success does not come over night. I still dream about becoming a famous stencil artist.
Where do you get your ideas for your works?
I get my ideas from real people expressing true beauty. I am inspired……….
These past few weeks have been incredibly busy with getting everything ready for my two solo shows in Sept and Oct. The two shows are incredible and they will exhibit some beautiful pieces which you will just have to wait to see for yourselves. The Melbourne Stencil Festival 2008 which just ended was a complete success and both PaperMonster pieces sold out on opening night. Also, Crybaby Art Gallery has recently made some great sales on PaperMonster originals and they only have a couple left. You can snag those pieces up ****HERE****

SG: Please tell us about yourself?
PM: My name is PaperMonster and I am a stencil graffiti artist. I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
PM: I currently live in Northern New Jersey, a hop and skip away from New York City.
I took some time this weekend to go on a nice adventure in Brooklyn. It was a great chance to leave some free street art pieces around for people to take if they came across them. It is the beginning of what I hope to be an ongoing project of installed art both permanent and temporary. If you would like to take one of the PaperMonster pieces home you can go in search of them on (Bedford/5thSt, Bowery/Broome, and Spring/Bowery) Check out some pics from the weekend below. Enjoy!!

There are many great shows in the upcoming months of Aug, Sept, and Oct which will feature work from PaperMonster and added to the incredible lineup of shows is Bowl-A-Rama II which is being put together by CryBaby Art Gallery and Kirsten Easthope. I had the honor of visiting the lanes and was impressed by the layout and degree/range of art that is up for show/sale. If you are interested in viewing pieces from the first show you can catch images here (www.asburylanes.com/galleries/Pins2/index.html) Stay posted for more sneak previews of the progress of the pins. Incredible list of artist coming up for the next Dirty Pilot show.
There are many new shows and projects taking place in these upcoming months. One of them is an exciting group show coming up with DirtyPilot.com with a great list of artist. I will be posting more details as soon as I get more information, but you can check out two of my pieces for the show below. Both pieces were inspired by the upcoming Olympics taking place on 8.8.08. About two summers ago I had the opportunity to visit Beijing and travel through China. It is absolutely beautiful but while there will be a celebration of sporting events there are also many issues within the country as any country which will be overshadowed. These two pieces attempt at speaking to what is going on at a deeper level within the country. Check out more below. (Click on images to view larger)
This is the first time that I have put an actual stencil within a piece. This piece is within a large black frame and the glass is painted while the stencil is floating inside.
Details of larger image.
This is the canvas piece after using the stencil which is held in the frame in the first piece.
As promised here is the flyer hot off the press of the Art Whino x TAGUR shoes “Inked Souls” show going down on August 2nd. It is an honor to join the 35 artist chosen to create some incredible art for the show. The list of artist is incredible and it ranges from legendary graffiti artist to fine art/modern art creators. I am very excited to check out the work of some old friends like Adam Russell and Jazirock which I had the pleasure of meeting during our group show. Check out more info on the image below and feel free to spread the word on the show:::

Stay posted for shot of my finished shoe design as well as the canvas piece that will go along with the shoe!!
I have always tried to challenge myself and this upcoming September (DirtyPilot.com) and October (Metropolis Gallery) will prove just how much I have pushed myself for my two solo shows (back to back) to create some incredible and beautiful pieces. All of the pieces for both shows are aimed at being as accessible/affordable as possible to everyone. Metropolis Gallery has just received 5 new pieces from PaperMonster which will show on July 4th before my solo show takes place during October. My Metropolis Gallery Solo Show is going to be a massive event and it will truly go down as a visual feast. Mike Egan (Here) will be having a solo show titled “Praying at the Funeral” taking place on July 4th for Metropolis Gallery so if you are in the area you must check it out.
“Chase” 1/2 (each sold separately) 9″x12″ Stencil Collage on Canvas

I truly love these three pieces shown above. They are portions of larger stencils yet they show fantastic emotion. You can catch the original stencil for “Chase” in Stencil Nation by Russell Howze.
“Send Me Home” 11″x14″ Stencil Collage on Canvas
$120 ::::To Purchase Contact(info@metropolis-store.com)
“Bring Him Home” 11″x14″ Stencil Collage on Canvas
$120 ::::To Purchase Contact(info@metropolis-store.com)
These last two are a set speaking on the desire for change from both sides (example: wife wanting husband back from war, husband wanting to see family and the role in which politics and this upcoming presidential election will have on our future)
As promised here is a new sneak preview of the upcoming show “Inked Souls” for Art Whino Gallery (www.artwhino.com) which will take place on August 2nd from 6pm-Midnight. I will soon have the show flyer which will show the incredible lineup of 32 artist taking part in this monumental show which has been organized by Art Whino and TAGUR (www.tagur.com.) PaperMonster along with the other artist will exhibit their custom shoe creation along with one canvas piece. The show, lineup of artist and variety custom TAGUR shoes are going to make history. P.S. A very exciting post coming by this weekend with some sly previews of some work.
Two beautiful packages came in the mail yesterday. One, the highly anticipated Stencil Nation Book by Russell Howze (www.stencilnation.org.) The second package involves a very exciting show coming up fro Art Whino in a couple of months. You can catch a hint towards the end of the post. Now back to talking about Stencil Nation!!
The book is purely and simply one word: PHENOMENAL
It truly captures the roots as well as present/future state of stencil art. In it you will find photos and commentary covering topics/artist throughout the world. The book covers it all from the most simple yet powerful stencils from people just inspired to leave a message, to the most dedicate artists in the world exploring the possibilities of beauty behind stencil art. There is a remarkable Chronology of stencil art history as well as a section purely dedicated to shedding light into the best tips for any artist who is looking to explore and have a hands-on approach to stencil art. I highly suggest you pick up a copy. Bookstores in NYC have already sold out of the book (I have the best sources aka Ren.) Make sure to visit www.stencilnation.org and pick up a copy or visit your local bookstore. If they don’t have it, take a piece of paper and write the name as big as possible for them so they can order it!! A huge thanks to Russell Howze for truly putting a incredible piece of art together. Thank you. Check out some of the appearances by PaperMonster in the book below. Amazing!!
Fantastic cover and great size. There is a slight hint of an upcoming sticker design. What could it be? This is in the stencil cut-outs section. Fantastic.

This past weekend marked an incredible event known as the Tri-City Arts Tour/Festival in NJ bringing together Red Bank, Long Branch, and Asbury Park. CryBaby Art Gallery (Asbury Park, NJ) put together two incredible shows: one solo show by Bethany Marchman and the other a group show featuring PaperMonster, Pilar Alvarez, Shaunna Peterson, KuKula, Kelly Haigh, and Carrie Ann Bade.
Both the show and festival were incredible. I have never seen such a large amount of flow into a gallery from all ages and see so many people with such a true love for the art. The streets were filled with people sharing art and there was everything you could imagine. It was truly a visual grenade for your eyes. Check out some of the pics from the show below and thank you to everyone who came out. I have never handed out so many PaperMonster stickers ever!! It was incredible!! Thanks to everyone again and thanks to CJ, Jenn, and everyone at CryBaby Gallery for an incredible time!!
