As an artist you do not just have to be conscience of what you are creating and where you are moving forward but also how your peers and “art heroes” are progressing. You can learn a lot from just watching on reading about artists and everyone has a handful of artist that they absolutely love and are inspired by. I recently saw some new work and read a wonderful interview from Miss Van (
HERE) over @Juxtapoz.com. Miss Van was one of my first inspirations in creating these unique yet similar female characters that I paint today. She has a wonderful solo show opening October 1st @StolenSpace Gallery in London. Mac and Retna (
HERE) are the definition of collaboration. They bring incredible technique and you can tell that there is a constant level of communication in their work as they push each other to make really powerful painting and murals. You can view images of their recent show @Robert Berman Gallery in California. Both shows are open to the public so make sure to catch them out if you are in the area.

I had the pleasure to sit down with Senses Lost (
HERE) and chat about the process of curating the “Friends With Knives” Stencil Group Show current open at DirtyPilot.com (
HERE). The interview covers everything from the styles of stencil art I wanted to highlight in the show as well as the my thoughts on the future of stencil graffiti. Here is a short excerpt from the interview: To read more visit:
::Via SensesLost:::
Explain the concept behind “Friends with Knives Show”?
The entire concept behind the “Friends with Knives” show is ultimately about diversity. When I was approached to curate a stencil group show through
DirtyPilot.com. I wanted to have stencil artists that really cover a wide range of styles. We are all individuals and have taken the fundamentals from cutting thick pieces of cardboard with a kitchen knife to making beautiful works of art……
“As stencil artists we have a common bond and we know the hardships and struggles that come with the work that we do. The process of cutting stencils can be grueling but at the same time it is extremely difficult to gain respect and admiration for the huge amount of work and dedication that we put in from the art world at large.” -PaperMonster

Also, I want to send a HUGE thanks to everyone who covered the show on sites all over!!

This past weekend marked 2009’s Raritan River Walk mural event in New Brunswick, NJ. Last year was a really great time and the turnout this year was even bigger. It was great to see everyone coming together and pushing each other to try new things. I want to thank everyone who not only came out to paint but who also stopped by and shared such great words of encouragement. This year I wanted to experiment with some new ways to use the wall and I stumbled upon what I call “black holes.” Hope to make more of these in the future.

This morning I stumbled on news of a new Banksy stencil on the streets in Europe and it immediately took me back to pieces that LECKOmio (
HERE) had created several months ago. It may or may not be true but I feel that Banksy’s newest creation may be a critique on LECKOmio’s pieces and use of “graffiti slogans.” You be the judge.
Catch Stefan Winterle’s Piece Below as well as Banksy street piece below.

I just got word that you can watch BombIt: The Movie for
FREE online over at Babelgum (
HERE). It is a fantastic movie covering street art, graffiti, stencil art, and urban art in different locations around the world. I just watched it recently on DVD and it brought me to tears at one point towards the end of the film. It is very inspirational and a great watch whether you see it today at work, at home or this weekend. You can view it online at the following link:
I think a movie should be made about stencil artists. Although I have seen many amazing films covering urban art and graffiti, there has never been one comprehensive take on just stencil art and stencil graffiti. That would make for a fantastic project.

Below are two of the many artits in the film that have inspired me in my work. Blek Le Rat (pictured below) and Pose2 aka Maxx Moses

Leslie Granda-Hill (
HERE) sent over some beautiful photos of lasts weeks panting session in Trenton, NJ. These are by far my favorite photos. In the first picture you can see my technique of using my hand as a paint brush. I use my hands to paint, paste, and spray my stencils on canvas so it is something I feel comfortable doing on a wall, eventhough the washing my hands part is not fun when there is no running water around.
