PaperMonster’s Favorite Things January 2010

January 8, 2010
Happy New Year!! It is January and that means a fresh new PaperMonster’s Favorite Things post is here. This month I bring you tons of new toys, photos, applications and videos to kick your year to a great start. Enjoy.
PaperMonster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiJOLY5_Csc
First we have the new IA5 iPod Touch/Phone Dock from iHome (HERE) which is in one word “INCREDIBLE.” It does not only just play all your music in great audio quality but it contains an application that allows you to adjust what you want to hear when you wake up and go to bed while at the same time it tracks your sleeping and waking patterns to let you know if your are having enough sleep. WOW (Check out the video above from G4Tv at the CES.)

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/01/harbin_ice_and_snow_sculpture.html

Followed by the iHome we have photos of Harbin, China (HERE) . I actually had the pleasure of visiting Harbin in my trip to China several years back and this city is a mix of Chinese and Russian influence as it is one of the most Northern cities in China. During the Winter they take ice from their lake and surrounding water and create gigantic impressive ice sculptures and create an entire ice city. You have to see the photos for yourself.

Following the ice sculptures of Harbin we have one of my favorite iPhone/iPod touch apps to come out so far. It is called NOVA by Gameloft (HERE) and if you don’t own Halo or want to play Halo in your office or anywhere you go this is the closest and best game your will ever buy. It has an incredible story as well as a AMAZING wifi multiplayer option which you can go against players all using the application. At one point PaperMonster was at the top 80 out of 4000 players in terms of game kills and points. I was hooked and you will be too. Check it out above.

Brainstorm Magazine Issue# 11 Interviews PaperMonster

January 6, 2010
Brainstorm Magazine (HERE) Issue #11 will soon be released and I had the pleasure of being featured in an artists interview for the magazine. Past artists interviewed include Blu (HERE) and Arofish (HERE) so needless to say it feels fantastic to be asked to be featured in the magazine. The interview covers topics such as my origins, what is art, and the current state of street art. Catch some excerpts from the interview below or read it for yourself at the following link::
http://www.kolahstudio.com/Underground/?p=686
Via Brainstorm Magazine:

“We are pushing art forward and inspiring the youth to do bigger and better things to continue the movement. We have a large amount of power and it is one of the most exciting parts about being an artist today.”-PaperMonster

“I have never made any paintings because I want to make anyone happy or because I need to fit into a specific category or follow rules. I make stencil art portraits of women because I want to share that beauty, strength and mystery of women. No rules or level of rejection could get me to stop what I do”-PaperMonster

I will be posting the entire issue as soon as it is released so stay posted. Enjoy

Malboro Middle School Stencil Art Project!!

December 23, 2009
One of the most rewarding parts about being an artist is meeting someone at a show or getting an email that simply says “Thank you for being an inspiration.” Recently Ms. Chaplinski from Marlboro Middle School in NJ sent over these photos of her arts students’ completed stencil art project inspired by my artwork. I love how the children put this project together and I think the finished paintings are fantastic!! They did a great job!! See for yourself below and click on the images to view larger.

December 18, 2009
I recently received an email that basically said “Ay PaperMonster. Where the hell are your favorite things for December?” In the chaos of Art Basel photos I completely forgot to post my favorite things for this month and now here they are right in the middle of all this holiday celebration. First I have the videogame Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (HERE). If you follow me on Twitter (HERE) you know that I have been watching gameplay videos of this game and I am blown away. It has won several Game Of The Year awards and it deserves it. Catch a clip of the gameplay below. You will not regret playing full price for this game with everything you get in return. Following Uncharted 2 we have the Clipse new album “Til The Casket Drops.” I have been anticipating this album and could not be happier with it. There are so many tracks that just blow your mind in terms of quality music. Check out some of my favorite tracks from the album below and don’t forget to check out the album artwork by Kaws. Right After the clipse we have the cheapest gift you can get your loved one.The Pencil Crossbow (HERE) !! All you need is a couple of pencils and rubber bands and you can make your very own functional crossbow. Lastly we have the gift that keeps on giving.: HD video of Iron Man 2 (HERE). Can’t wait until May 7th. Hope you enjoyed my favorite things for December. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Photos: Art Whino Gallery Exhibition @ Art Basel Miami 2009 feat PaperMonster

December 16, 2009
Below you can find my final batch of photos from this year’s Art Basel Miami 2009. One of the biggest events that I had the pleasure to taking part in was Art Whino Gallery’s exhibition. Art Whino took over an entire location, creating a gigantic gallery setting with floating walls from the ceiling and the gallery even had its own bar, kitchen and pool. The quality of art was extremely high and many of the artists participating in the show were there to share their work with fans and the amazing crowds that stopped by the gallery. You can catch photos of the entire exhibition below.

Sightseeing

December 14, 2009
Before posting pictures of Art Whino Gallery’s main exhibition during Art Basel 2009 I wanted to share some of the highlights from several of my favorite art fairs, exhibitions, and events. Below you will see pictures from Stages, the Scope art fair, the Aqua art fair and finally Buff Monster and Tara McPherson’s live painting session in Miami. There was such a high quality of art at so many locations that it was a dream come true to see it in person.

Stages
Os Gemeos painting. This painting has not received much attention but it is one of my favorites of the entire show.
Dzine’s beautiful bike. You can’t tell in the picture but the bike is on top of glass which has been broken due to all of the people trying to get a deeper look into the detail of the bike.
First real Kaws painting I have had the pleasure of viewing in person. Extremely sharp.
Off to Scope art fair
As soon as you walk into both Scope and Aqua you are greated by Aj Fozik’s work.

Jeff Soto water colors. Very nice details and colors in these small pieces.
This women is not checking out trash but a sound/beat installation by David Ellis.
Loved Nunca’s piece at the Carmichael Gallery booth.
Two personal favorites of the entire fair. Doze Green above and Calma’s piece below.

Kids were going crazy over this. The mold has a projected face that makes you feel like you are actually staring at a real person. Very good concept.
Tes One mural.
Off to Aqua art fair.
Love the quality of work at the Thinkspace booth

2nd Aj Fozik’s piece greating people as they walk into Aqua
Nice to see two of Megg’s pieces at the fair. Super talented and just overall well rounded artist.
After Aqua it was time to grab some nacho’s with Joka and hang out until Buff Monster and Tara McPherson got to work on their live painting collaboration.
They both worked so well together and you could tell that there was such a high level of comfort between them. They deserve all of the success and much more to come.

Black Holes: Art Basel 2009 Miami

December 11, 2009
While in Miami during Art Basel 2009, I had the opportunity to do some new outdoor “Black Holes” which I have been wanting to do more of for quite some time now. During the process this club owner across from the street we were painting came out and said “You guys are finally painting here. Thank god. ” That felt nice to hear. Opening Photos: Brooklynite Gallery “Go Get Your Shinebox”

November 23, 2009
This past Saturday I headed over to the opening of Brooklynite Gallery’s Go Get Your Shinebox group show. The show was fantastic and it was great to see and meet so many people that I have immense respect for including: Meggs (HERE), Aiko (HERE) , Luna Park (HERE), Shai Dahan (from Abztract ) and other amazing friends that passed by for the show. The night was electric with energy and the participating artists in the show brought some quality work out for the crowd to see and even interact with. My specific shinebox dealt with a Mask Shop and playing with themes of dual identities, mystery, and our dreams of becoming something more than who or what we are today. I also had the opportunity to work on another one of my “Black Holes” along the back walls of the gallery along with artists such as Dain, Specter, Dada, Peru Ana, Billi Kid, Kozbe and Chris Mendoza. Overall I had a blast and it is a great show to end November right before heading out to Miami for Art Basel next week. Catch images of the entire opening below and stay posted for more photos later this week.

NOV 2009: Unequalled Magazine PaperMonster Interview

November 18, 2009
Unequalled Magazine (HERE) recently sat down and talked with PaperMonster for their latest collection of artist interviews. I had the pleasure to chatting with Ben Warwick, editor of Unequalled Magazine on a huge range to topics including; stencil art, the commercial value of urban art, accessibility and role of technology, as well as some future plans for the end of 2009 and 2010. You can catch some snippets of the interview below and you can read the full version of the interview at the following link:
Unequalled Magazine’s PaperMonster Interview
Info Via Unequalled Magazine::
Q. You describe yourself as a stencil graffiti artist, would you like to expand on this description to help negate any preconceptions a reader may have.
A. “…..We may be considered vandals but our intentions are to express ourselves, motivate, inspire, and continue a movement of beauty and skill that will outlive our generation and future generations to come….” Fore More Visit (HERE)

Q. Graffiti art as a whole has become more commercial and globally accepted in recent years, how has this affected your approach to your work? Has commercial possibilities completely over taken any initial philosophy/passion that drew you into graffiti art?
A. “….It would be great to be paid thousands for projects and collaborations but my name (PaperMonster) is worth more than any check I could ever get for any project. It lives after I die and after I stop painting. It is a very delicate line we walk when as artists we want attention and recognition but the quality and innovation of our work has to be consistent….”For More Visit (HERE)

Q.You appear to welcome the possibilities of new media platforms/technology, for example the wallpapers you created for increasingly popular smart phones, will fans of your work be able to enjoy more of this in the future or was this purely an exposure move?
A. “I think the whole concept is about accessibility. I want my art to be as accessible to people as possible…..”For More Visit (HERE)

November: PaperMonster’s Favorite Things

November 9, 2009
This month’s PaperMonster’s Favorite things are for the most part holiday inspired. The first is Nixon’s newest headphone release titled the “Trooper” which you can bed purchase through the Nixon site for only $50 (HERE) After the headphones we have the EC-f scooter from Yamaha (HERE) which is a eco-friendly electric scooter. In addition to the scooter we have the most recent collaboration between GoldCoin x Argonaut Resin’s latest resin figure which you can find more details about (HERE.) In one word the GoldCoin resin figure is “Impressive” . Some of my favorites for November in terms of media and games are Ken Block’s and Subaru’s latest monster, the Subaru TRAX STI (HERE) which is a snow vehicle unlike anything you have ever seen. You can view a video clip of the vehicle and all its abilities below. Also, one of the most anticipated games of the year is due to be released this week: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (HERE). Needless to say if the game lives up to the current gaming hype it will definitely be recognized as the game of the year. Lastly we have a beautiful video of one of my personal favorite artists as part of the I.Sat series of artists videos (HERE) from Latin America of T-Freak from Sao Palo, Brazil. Enjoy. PaperMonster

Tragic Earthquakes Strike Indonesia

October 20, 2009
A while back I posted some beautiful images sent over by Fiky in Indonesia of PaperMonster stickers by the coast. Since then, tragic earthquakes have done incredible damage and destruction within Indonesia including her home town of Padang. She was kind enough to send over some images to show the degree of damage and even some PaperMonster stickers that stand tall amongst the choas and rebuilding efforts. Please take time to read about the current state of Indonesia and the dramatic number of lives that have been taken reaching upwards of 700 people killed as a result of the earthquake. You can read more (HERE) and if you feel moved to donate and provide relief for Indonesia there is a very quick way to provide help to hundreds if not thousands through UNICEF. October: PaperMonster’s Favorite Things

October 8, 2009
October’s PaperMonster’s Favorite things are all over the globe from France to your local lake and garbage can. Music and art go hand in hand and one of the most recent records that I absolutely love is Kid Cudi’s “Man One The Moon: The End Of Day” album. It is very inspirational and the music makes you want to create and stay motivated. Catch the insane collaborations between Kid Cudi and Ratatat. Followed by Cudi we have the Palace of Versailles (HERE) in France which is having some beautiful art exhibitions including work from Xavier Veilhan. I had the pleasure of visiting the palace in 2005 and I would love to go back. Finally I present you some coold designs and concepts including the fish bowl trash bags (HERE) (someone make these in the US) and some insane concepts for a water-car and electrical cars concepts which you can find (HERE). Photos: NY Art Book Fair 2009 @PS1ContempArt

October 5, 2009
I had the amazing opportunity to take part in the 2009 NY Art Book Fair signing copies of the Year One Rewind book by DirtyPilot (HERE) for the SCB Art Book Collection – Booth Z-01 alongside artists Cern, Daze, and Chris Stain. The fair had a huge amount of eye candy with books, zines, posters, and magazines featuring a wide range of art. I may be biased but our booth had the best collection of art books but maybe that is just my opinion. You can check out images of the fair below and even catch images of Martha Cooper signing copies of her books during the fair. Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

Miss Van/Retna & El Mac:Shows To See

September 30, 2009
As an artist you do not just have to be conscience of what you are creating and where you are moving forward but also how your peers and “art heroes” are progressing. You can learn a lot from just watching on reading about artists and everyone has a handful of artist that they absolutely love and are inspired by. I recently saw some new work and read a wonderful interview from Miss Van (HERE) over @Juxtapoz.com. Miss Van was one of my first inspirations in creating these unique yet similar female characters that I paint today. She has a wonderful solo show opening October 1st @StolenSpace Gallery in London. Mac and Retna (HERE) are the definition of collaboration. They bring incredible technique and you can tell that there is a constant level of communication in their work as they push each other to make really powerful painting and murals. You can view images of their recent show @Robert Berman Gallery in California. Both shows are open to the public so make sure to catch them out if you are in the area.

Interview: @SensesLost with PaperMonster on “Friends with Knives” Stencil Group Show

September 24, 2009
I had the pleasure to sit down with Senses Lost (HERE) and chat about the process of curating the “Friends With Knives” Stencil Group Show current open at DirtyPilot.com (HERE). The interview covers everything from the styles of stencil art I wanted to highlight in the show as well as the my thoughts on the future of stencil graffiti. Here is a short excerpt from the interview: To read more visit:
http://senseslost.com/2009/09/19/friends-with-knives-papermonster-interview/
::Via SensesLost:::

Explain the concept behind “Friends with Knives Show”?
The entire concept behind the “Friends with Knives” show is ultimately about diversity. When I was approached to curate a stencil group show through DirtyPilot.com. I wanted to have stencil artists that really cover a wide range of styles. We are all individuals and have taken the fundamentals from cutting thick pieces of cardboard with a kitchen knife to making beautiful works of art……
“As stencil artists we have a common bond and we know the hardships and struggles that come with the work that we do. The process of cutting stencils can be grueling but at the same time it is extremely difficult to gain respect and admiration for the huge amount of work and dedication that we put in from the art world at large.” -PaperMonster

Also, I want to send a HUGE thanks to everyone who covered the show on sites all over!!

PHOTOS: Raritan River Art Walk 2009 New Brunswick, NJ

September 22, 2009
This past weekend marked 2009’s Raritan River Walk mural event in New Brunswick, NJ. Last year was a really great time and the turnout this year was even bigger. It was great to see everyone coming together and pushing each other to try new things. I want to thank everyone who not only came out to paint but who also stopped by and shared such great words of encouragement. This year I wanted to experiment with some new ways to use the wall and I stumbled upon what I call “black holes.” Hope to make more of these in the future.
