This morning I stumbled on news of a new Banksy stencil on the streets in Europe and it immediately took me back to pieces that LECKOmio (HERE) had created several months ago. It may or may not be true but I feel that Banksy’s newest creation may be a critique on LECKOmio’s pieces and use of “graffiti slogans.” You be the judge.
Catch Stefan Winterle’s Piece Below as well as Banksy street piece below.
I am extremely happy to annouce that the “Friends With Knives” stencil group show @DirtyPilot.com (HERE) is now officially OPEN. Seeing the show, I was immediately impressed by the work that all of the artists put in and the layout of the show is fantastic. You have to see it for yourself. Check out the entire show featuring over 60 stencil art pieces from 15 incredibly talented stencil artists at the following link:
I just got word that you can watch BombIt: The Movie for FREE online over at Babelgum (HERE). It is a fantastic movie covering street art, graffiti, stencil art, and urban art in different locations around the world. I just watched it recently on DVD and it brought me to tears at one point towards the end of the film. It is very inspirational and a great watch whether you see it today at work, at home or this weekend. You can view it online at the following link:
I think a movie should be made about stencil artists. Although I have seen many amazing films covering urban art and graffiti, there has never been one comprehensive take on just stencil art and stencil graffiti. That would make for a fantastic project.
I recently had the great opportunity to sit down and have a “Back Talk” interview with Juxtapoz.com (HERE). Such amazing artists as Insa, Mac, Mike Shinoda, Mike Giant and many more talented artists have conducted “Back Talk” interviews in the past and I am extremely humbled and honored to join the list. How far is that from New Jersey/New York? It is about 10 THOUSAND miles away. If you would like stickers or have pictures of PaperMonster stickers send them over to v@papermonster.org and I will post them!!
Leslie Granda-Hill (HERE) sent over some beautiful photos of lasts weeks panting session in Trenton, NJ. These are by far my favorite photos. In the first picture you can see my technique of using my hand as a paint brush. I use my hands to paint, paste, and spray my stencils on canvas so it is something I feel comfortable doing on a wall, eventhough the washing my hands part is not fun when there is no running water around. I recently sat down with Art Nouveau Magazine (HERE) for an interview about my art, my blog, the “Give and Take” project, my influences and stencil art in general. It was a wonderful interview with very interesting questions such as what the role does the internet play in the lives of current artists, the importance of color in my work, and what is my ultimate goal as an artist?
For More on Art Nouveau Mag and the PaperMonster interview visit: http://www.an-mag.com/
ANM: When did you first know you were an artist?
PM: We are all artists. We create and destroy and can make something out of nothing. That is really the essence of the word artist. We create because we not only want to express ourselves, but we want to share what we have with the world…. ANM: You blog extensively, how important is blogging to building a fan base?
PM: My blog in all honesty is my life. It helps me share my work, share what I love, and get feedback on what I am doing. I think that not just blogs but the internet as a whole has really opened up the doors for a lot of opportunity to where if you are interested in art or a specific show you can see it all before an event opens to the public . My blog and any other social networking site serve one major role. I control myself…… Fore More Visit (HERE)

I am very excited to show some new images from my “Give and Take” Project. The city is full of treasures, texture and communication. The new pieces for the project attempt to capture the decay of colors and textures of the street and give them new life. It is great to explore new locations around the city and visit some classic spots that are sure to never disappoint, such as the Candle Building on Wooster Street. I think the project is going in the right direction and I can’t wait to see what direction it takes me in. Enjoy the images below and feel free to send me your thoughts at v@papermonster.org
Not sure of the name of the street artist who placed the bowl of cherries but together, along with the glare from the trees this picture turned out great. Enjoy
On Sunday, I took a moment to head over to the Os Gemeos Mural on Bowery and Houston. This project just one word: IMPRESSIVE. If you are in the New York City Area, you have to take a look at this mural. Touch it, view it up close or from far away. However you like. Os Gemeos are bringing together so many techniques and colors that the mural is sure to impress many people. Although the entire mural is not fully completed, you can tell from the pictures below that this is truly a masterpiece being put together. One thing I noticed during my visit was: THE SUN. Os Gemeos has been working under incredibly harsh sunlight and heat. From anyone who paints outdoors these conditions can really give your body a beating. The level of talent really shines and there is no question that the final product will be breath taking.

Check out the photo Matt sent over with his PaperMonster stickers and his stencil work in progress in the background all they way from California. Great job Matt. Keep it going.
This morning came to a fantastic start as I recieved a great email from Alexia of Liz Claiborne New York (HERE) Marketing with an original image from the national ad campaign featuring not only beautiful fashion but designer Issac Mizrahi. In the email Alexia wrote:
“To answer your question, there was a discussion as to whether or not the graffiti should be photoshopped out. Ultimately the decision was made to keep it in. The whole goal for our national ad campaign was to keep the environment as real as possible. Being that graffiti is a natural element in the urban atmosphere, we just went with what the scene had to offer.”
She is absolutely correct!! Urban art and graffiti are truly natural elements of our environment and they exemplify communication between people and their environment as well as the urge and desire to create. Fantastic job!!
This just blew my face open. I just ran into a wonderful post by Grant for his site HERE (LINK) of a fashion critique on an ad for Liz Caiborne which also happens to feature a PaperMonster signature tag on a wall above the designer Issac Mizrahi. Why did they keep that there? and why was it not photoshopped out? A picture is worth a thousand words. Check out the images below.
This is an ad at my train station in Connecticut. It ‘s for Liz Claiborne and it features Issac Mizrahi. Notice the man in a green scarf sitting on the bench. On closer scrutiny, this proves to be Monsieur Mizrahi himself, lost in thought, putting in this carefully managed appearance, a little in the manner of the master Alfred Hitchcock in his early days.
It’s a wonderful piece of advertising. It has a certain emotional tonality that distinguishes it from most of the fashion advertising I’ve ever seen. It has a narrative verve, doesn’t it?
But of course the semantics of the narrative have been withheld from us. So the fun of the ad is figuring out what’s up. There are three dyads. The two women to the left are having a great conversation. About what? The two women in the middle: are they together? Probably not. The two women to the right: mother and child? Surely. That leaves the model who as a contemporary model is looking not quite of this world.
And Mizrahi himself. Reading. What? Why? What is he doing here? It’s a little like a celebrity appearance, a cameo. The ad is equal parts naturalism and evident artifice. Perhaps Mizrahi should be understood as a kind of muse: the designer who attends every public showing of his art. All the way from Austria…where? YES, AUSTRIA I received these photos from Nino who just recently recieved his PaperMonster Sticker Pack in the mail. In the photo you can see a stencil that Nino is working on. I think most artists never get to hear it enough that they are appreciated or that they are someones inspiration and it feels great and pushes me more to want to create when I get such kind words. So if you recieved a sticker pack in the mail, send cool photos over to v@papermonster.org and I will post them on the site!!

As artists (stencil or your preference) we all develop a desire to learn many styles and techniques. It is really what pushes us forward and A1one (HERE) is the type or artist who really brings a ton of styles together and has a powerful grasp on a wealth of skills. A1one is from Iran and amongst the current turmoil of current issues in the country A1one has captured the spirit of true public protesting and visual political messages. You can check out his fantastic work at the following link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/irangraffiti/
