Stencil Group Show” Art Whino Gallery Opening Photos

November 16, 2008
——————————————————-
This weekend was the opening of the Stencil Group Show for Art Whino Gallery and it has been one of my favorite shows this year. The show brings together stencil artists from all over the world into one collective space where people can truly take in the variety and ingenuity behind beautiful and raw stencil art. The entire collection will be opened until Dec 6th  with a special presentation by author of Stencil Nation, Russell Howze on November 23rd from 12-6pm.  You do not want to miss out on getting some affordable original works from some of the worlds most talented stencil artists including: PaperMonster, John Koleszar, LECKOmio, Chris Stain, Jef Aerosol,  E.L.K., Mefee, SOULE, Janet Bike Girl, Logan Hicks, Dave Lowell, Jazirock, Peter K, Billy Mode, PRVRT and many more.
John Koleszar and Stefan Winterle aka LECKOmio flew in for the show (John from Arizona and Stefan from Germany) and it was such a great experience to meet and work with them. They both helped a ton with the install and brought some incredible art to the event. I can not thank them enough for how big of a help they were and how honored I felt to be working with them. It was a pleasure and they are not just amazing stencil artists, they are amazing people. You can check out their work here:

http://myspace.com/winterle or http://www.stefanwinterle.de
and

Vinyl Killers 6 opens on October 30th in Portland, Oregon at The Goodfoot. The Goodfoot is located at 2845 SE Stark St. and is open daily from 5 PM to 2:30 AM. There will also be vinyl only selections from dj’s monkeytek, ryan organ and carrier during the opening

The often imitated, never duplicated, OG vinyl art show, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world’s landfills. This year there have been at least 5 other vinyl shows in North America alone and interest in the artform is at an all time high. After five annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers remains committed to staying open call, independent, D-I-Y, and free of corporate sponsorship.

Since it’s inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has showcased well over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at the VK website shows both the genres global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. Media recognition for this innovative show includes The Art Of Rebellion 2 and Stencil Nation, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. In 2005 Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the room that he decorated with painted records for San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts featured in Time magazine.

FormatMag: New PaperMonster Interview

October 22, 2008
————————————————

FormatMag.com (Here) just released their new issue containing interviews from PaperMonster, James Jarvis, Brixton, Laurel Nakadate, CreateBuildDestroy, Rehab Chicago, Tittsworth and Jeff Chang. Paper Monster’s interview has some great questions about the current state of street and stencil art as well as what drives and motivates PaperMonster. You can check out some screen grabs from the interview below as well as portions of the interview. For the entire interview visit:
http://www.formatmag.com/art/paper-monster/
Thanks FormatMag!!

For More Visit: http://www.formatmag.com/art/paper-monster/

:::::Excerpt from the interview:::::

Format: Do you feel that having so called ’street art’ in galleries is making it more accessible or less accessible to its intended audience?
PaperMonster: This is really the “million dollar” question. As artists we are not just a product of what we create but we have risen to the level at which we are simply and only through our audience. The public can either make or break who we are. Through buying our work they fund us to progress and grow to different projects. Our audience moves our name and images across countries to a level that we could never do alone. Blek once told me that work in the street versus a gallery is as simple as having one hundred thousand people see your work in one day versus one hundred people viewing your work in a gallery. In both arenas you are touching people in different ways.

The essence of street art is decay and within a confined gallery space there is preservation. If you look at some major projects by two artist: Swoon and Os Gemeos you can see that when they were provided the space (Deitch Projects) they completely created an installation that was a world onto its own. This could never be done on the streets and it really illustrates the need for spaces where artists can grow and take their work to that next level. As artists we all crave recognition and the gallery space seems to provide a means of instant gratification as opposed to the street where in a matter of seconds your work can de destroyed. The solution, while not an exact science, is to maintain a healthy medium between the street and gallery space. If you accomplish and flourish in both, then the question of accessibility is gone. You maintain an audience as long as you keep people wondering “what is he going to do next?” and that is the ultimate goal…..longevity.

GEE Magazine October 08 Issue features PaperMonster

October 20, 2008
———————————-

GEE Magazine (here::: http://www.geemag.de/index.php) is an incredible magazine for anyone interested in gaming. The magazine is in German and they recently covered the “I am 8-bit” show in their October Issue. They chose some of their favorites from the show and you can catch some images from the magazine below and I have the translated write-up on PaperMonster below. If you read or speak German I would definitely suggest you subscribe to the magazine::

For More Visit::: http://www.geemag.de/index.phphttp://www.geemag.de/index.php::::::
The original Metroid (The Return of Samus) series as well as Mario Paint (SNES) are two games which are polar opposites yet they stand out in my childhood the most. I chose Samus as a character to immortalize purely based on her beauty and aggression. It is incredible how much emotion can come through a person’s eyes and Samus embodies this hard outer shell of a warrior with such delicate beauty underneath. Mario Paint was one of my favorite games because it allowed me to create everything from beautiful pictures to music. It was all packaged in this colorful gaming experience that continues to inspired me in terms of how I want people to feel when they see one of my paintings. The colors and sounds pop out immediately and it motivated me to express myself as an artist even if it sounded like a horrible ring-tone. Both games express what I want my children to grow up with in terms of having an incredible imagination and never being afraid to tackle something that is greater or bigger than yourself. Games have shaped who we are and how we can find strength in the puzzles we solve in life to succeed.

I receive a lot of different types of emails everyday but there is one recent email that really stands out. I received an email from Leah, a 7th grade teacher in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Leah is also a great sculptor and you can check out here work here:: http://www.wallerfoushee.com/
