“Word Up?” Show & Tell Gallery’s Group Show featuring artists PaperMonster, Ghost, Dixon, Omen, Skam, and Case opens Friday Jan 9th in collaboration with LE Gallery. The group show starts off 2009 in a great way showcasing new works from each artist. PaperMonster’s new work has grown larger with bolder textures and detail. Each piece explores the harmony between chaos and beauty with titles such as “True Identity” “The Beast Within” and “If He Only Knew” that dive into the secrets and hidden mysteries within women. Negative space and shadows heighten the degree of the unknown. Each stencil art piece allows the audience to interact and actively digest the stories contained in each painting making for a powerful visual experience.

Vinyl Killers 6 opens on October 30th in Portland, Oregon at The Goodfoot. The Goodfoot is located at 2845 SE Stark St. and is open daily from 5 PM to 2:30 AM. There will also be vinyl only selections from dj’s monkeytek, ryan organ and carrier during the opening
The often imitated, never duplicated, OG vinyl art show, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world’s landfills. This year there have been at least 5 other vinyl shows in North America alone and interest in the artform is at an all time high. After five annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers remains committed to staying open call, independent, D-I-Y, and free of corporate sponsorship.
Since it’s inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has showcased well over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at the VK website shows both the genres global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. Media recognition for this innovative show includes The Art Of Rebellion 2 and Stencil Nation, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. In 2005 Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the room that he decorated with painted records for San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts featured in Time magazine.

The spraycan is one of the emblematic symbols of street art, as much for connoisseurs as for the artists of this movement, even if other techniques are used like the stencil or collage.
In reference to the standard contents of a spraycan, 400 ml, the limit of 400 spraycans was set for the collection. This book presents this unique collection of 400 original works by artists from all over the world each using the same specifications: customization of an empty 400ml spraycan.

FormatMag.com (Here) just released their new issue containing interviews from PaperMonster, James Jarvis, Brixton, Laurel Nakadate, CreateBuildDestroy, Rehab Chicago, Tittsworth and Jeff Chang. Paper Monster’s interview has some great questions about the current state of street and stencil art as well as what drives and motivates PaperMonster. You can check out some screen grabs from the interview below as well as portions of the interview. For the entire interview visit:

Thanks FormatMag!!

Format: Do you feel that having so called ’street art’ in galleries is making it more accessible or less accessible to its intended audience?
PaperMonster: This is really the “million dollar” question. As artists we are not just a product of what we create but we have risen to the level at which we are simply and only through our audience. The public can either make or break who we are. Through buying our work they fund us to progress and grow to different projects. Our audience moves our name and images across countries to a level that we could never do alone. Blek once told me that work in the street versus a gallery is as simple as having one hundred thousand people see your work in one day versus one hundred people viewing your work in a gallery. In both arenas you are touching people in different ways.

The original Metroid (The Return of Samus) series as well as Mario Paint (SNES) are two games which are polar opposites yet they stand out in my childhood the most. I chose Samus as a character to immortalize purely based on her beauty and aggression. It is incredible how much emotion can come through a person’s eyes and Samus embodies this hard outer shell of a warrior with such delicate beauty underneath. Mario Paint was one of my favorite games because it allowed me to create everything from beautiful pictures to music. It was all packaged in this colorful gaming experience that continues to inspired me in terms of how I want people to feel when they see one of my paintings. The colors and sounds pop out immediately and it motivated me to express myself as an artist even if it sounded like a horrible ring-tone. Both games express what I want my children to grow up with in terms of having an incredible imagination and never being afraid to tackle something that is greater or bigger than yourself. Games have shaped who we are and how we can find strength in the puzzles we solve in life to succeed.

I receive a lot of different types of emails everyday but there is one recent email that really stands out. I received an email from Leah, a 7th grade teacher in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has been showing her class my work so that they can gain inspiration for their art projects. Leah sent over come pictures of what her class has put together and I think they are fantastic. It really brought a great feeling that my work is touching people and serving as a source of motivation. In our daily lives there are few times were people really show appreciation for what you do and it is great to see and hear kinds words. Leah is also a great sculptor and you can check out here work here:: http://www.wallerfoushee.com/
