Vincent Michael Gallery is proud to present ‘PaperMonster Ate That Little Boy.’ A solo exhibition featuring prolific stencil artist, PaperMonster. The exhibition is on display from July 2nd to July 31st. In honor of PaperMonster’s solo exhibition, Vincent Michael Gallery will be hosting an opening reception Friday, July 2nd from 6pm to 9pm.
To highlight PaperMonster’s personal and artistic growth over the past few years, it was only fitting his solo exhibition with Vincent Michael Gallery be titled ‘PaperMonster Ate That Little Boy.’ PaperMonster’s current oeuvre has taken his signature female images and infused each piece with greater depth, meaning and emotive expression. Each piece is a beautiful combination of layered imagery, textures and colors conveying themes of love, anger, fear, passion and mystery. Several portraits are layered images of women and powerful animals; speaking to the strength, ferocity and power that each women carries within. By continually developing his distinct use of collage, PaperMonster has taken his striking ability to explore facial expressions to new levels.

If you are in New York City on June 24th you should check out a wonderful art exhibition titled “Just Art 2010” (HERE) which is an auction helping to raise funds for the New York Civil Liberties Union. Myself (PaperMonster,) Greg Gossel, and several other talented artists have contributed work for the event and you can look at all of the works up for auction at the following site. Twenty-two contemporary artists were chosen to participate in Just Art 2010. The Exhibit is curated in four clusters of work, each representing one of four issues central to the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)’s work in 2010: Censorship, Privacy and Surveillance, Immigration Reform and Reproductive Rights. Each artist created artwork speaking to one of these four issues. While the show is eclectic in media and style to please almost any visitor, each cluster is cohesive; held together by a common medium or theme.
We would like to express our incredible gratitude to the artists. Each artist has slashed their prices to help raise funds for the NYCLU’s worthy work. For many of the more prolific artists in the group, Just Art 2010 offers unparalleled deals.
The lion’s share of the pieces in the Exhibit are listed below with images. You can browse the Auction by style/medium or minimum bid prices. To make a bid, please add a comment to the specific posting. We will contact you by e-mail to collect payment information in case you win the bid. If you MUST have a specific artwork, you may buy it by bidding its listed Market Value. This will pull the piece out of the Auction and make it yours on midnight of June 24, 2010.

Next up!!!!! One of the biggest announcements this month! The iPhone 4!! Now anything you knew about leaked photos or info does not even begin to explain the features and quality of this new phone. One of the major exciting features is a new addition called Facetime which is live video calling from iphone to iphone with the use of the front facing camera. Everything from the battery life, screen, camera (HD QUALITY VIDEO) and new operating system has been made better. Two very interesting shows open this weekend. The first is the UV Urban Black Light Art Experiment where artists have all painted works with fluorescent paints that react to black lights featuring works from Peter Krsko, Mike Ciccotello, Joe Iurato, Josl, Luv 1, Aja Washington, Jim Hancocks and PaperMonster. I created several pieces for this and I don’t even know how they will look like so I am super excited to see the entire collection. For more info check the flyer below. The second show you should catch is a solo show by JoKa where he has created a series of portraits slightly larger than a penny all created using toothpicks as a brush! You have to see it to believe the detail in these small miniatures. Check out more details below:

On August 7th Crewest Gallery will host “Friends With Knives” in Los Angeles, California curated by me, PaperMonster. It is a stencil group show unlike anything you will ever see and the artists list speaks for itself featuring: Blek le Rat, Broken Crow, Chris Stain, Dave Lowell, E.L.K, Greg Boudreau, HAHA, Henry Quiara, Joe Iurato, Koleszar, Leckomio, Mefee, Nathan Phaneuf, PaperMonster, Peat Wollaeger, Scotch, and Shai Dahan.

The artists come from all walks of life as well as from all over the world including Australia, United Kingdom, Paris, and throughout the United States. The show is not about how intricate, how many layers, or how much time it took these artists to cut each stencil but about showcasing the history, evolution, and future of stencil art. Paper Monster, the exhibits curator, has this to say about bringing the Friends With Knives to Crewest Gallery: “I chose to put these artists together for many different reasons. Some of the artists I have either been a fan of or have had the honor of showing with, collaborating, or meeting by chance in my life. As a whole we push each other and hopefully push the creativity of the stencil graffiti/art community. Being stencil artists we have a common bond and we know the hardships and struggles that come with the work that we do. The process of cutting stencils can be grueling and demanding. It is extremely difficult to gain respect and admiration for the huge amount of work and dedication that we put in our work from the art world but we are willing to do everything in our power to share our talent with the world. Many of us have been creating stencils for five to ten years and some of us are relatively unknown artists that deserve an opportunity to shine. My hope is that everyone in the show uses this opportunity to support their love and hopefully they will be leaders in the future as they continue to push stencil art further.”-PaperMonster

Info via the Electric Windows Site: “24 street artists will converge in Beacon, NY on Saturday July 31st to create live artwork and have their work installed on the exterior of a 19th century factory building. Electric Windows draws its name from the former electric blanket factory at the foot of Mount Beacon that will act as the backdrop for the event. E.W. turns the idea of a gallery inside out using the large industrial windows as frames for each artists work. Usually street art is not so easily contained in a rectangle but this installation ingeniously bridges the gap between indoor and outdoor art both inverting and subverting the concept of the art gallery. It is always important to surround yourself with people who are driven, motivated and push you to do bigger and better things. Koleszar (HERE) just sent over this photo of a recent stencil he completed. This is his process:
“What I am doing is breaking the image down into a color half tone, color separating out the cyan magenta yellow and black, and then cutting out all the dots. Time consuming to say the least. This one here was almost 2 months of cutting alone.”-Koleszar
I am blown away by how much time this type of stencil takes and it is a great example of how stencils can be used to really push art in a powerful way. The things your can do with your hand using stencils and your imagination is unlimited. Hopefully Koleszar’s work motivates you to try something new and creative today.
