A while back I posted some beautiful images sent over by Fiky in Indonesia of PaperMonster stickers by the coast. Since then, tragic earthquakes have done incredible damage and destruction within Indonesia including her home town of Padang. She was kind enough to send over some images to show the degree of damage and even some PaperMonster stickers that stand tall amongst the choas and rebuilding efforts. Please take time to read about the current state of Indonesia and the dramatic number of lives that have been taken reaching upwards of 700 people killed as a result of the earthquake. You can read more (HERE) and if you feel moved to donate and provide relief for Indonesia there is a very quick way to provide help to hundreds if not thousands through UNICEF. I had the amazing opportunity to take part in the 2009 NY Art Book Fair signing copies of the Year One Rewind book by DirtyPilot (HERE) for the SCB Art Book Collection – Booth Z-01 alongside artists Cern, Daze, and Chris Stain. The fair had a huge amount of eye candy with books, zines, posters, and magazines featuring a wide range of art. I may be biased but our booth had the best collection of art books but maybe that is just my opinion. You can check out images of the fair below and even catch images of Martha Cooper signing copies of her books during the fair. Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

As an artist you do not just have to be conscience of what you are creating and where you are moving forward but also how your peers and “art heroes” are progressing. You can learn a lot from just watching on reading about artists and everyone has a handful of artist that they absolutely love and are inspired by. I recently saw some new work and read a wonderful interview from Miss Van (HERE) over @Juxtapoz.com. Miss Van was one of my first inspirations in creating these unique yet similar female characters that I paint today. She has a wonderful solo show opening October 1st @StolenSpace Gallery in London. Mac and Retna (HERE) are the definition of collaboration. They bring incredible technique and you can tell that there is a constant level of communication in their work as they push each other to make really powerful painting and murals. You can view images of their recent show @Robert Berman Gallery in California. Both shows are open to the public so make sure to catch them out if you are in the area.
On Friday, October 2nd PaperMonster (myself), Chris “Daze” Ellis, Chris Stain, and Cern YMI will be taking part in the Printed Matter NY Art Book Fair at the PS1 MOMA Contemporary Art Center (HERE) doing a book signing of DirtyPilot.com’s (HERE) book “Year One Rewind.” All of the artists will be there from 2 to 4pm ready to sign books and PaperMonster will be there handing out free stickers and other goodies as well as some of the artists in attendace. If you are in the NYC area this is a great event to drop by even if you just want to say hello or catch the entire fair and its events. Catch info on the event below and images of each artist that will be at the book signing.

I had the pleasure to sit down with Senses Lost (HERE) and chat about the process of curating the “Friends With Knives” Stencil Group Show current open at DirtyPilot.com (HERE). The interview covers everything from the styles of stencil art I wanted to highlight in the show as well as the my thoughts on the future of stencil graffiti. Here is a short excerpt from the interview: To read more visit:
Explain the concept behind “Friends with Knives Show”? The entire concept behind the “Friends with Knives” show is ultimately about diversity. When I was approached to curate a stencil group show through DirtyPilot.com. I wanted to have stencil artists that really cover a wide range of styles. We are all individuals and have taken the fundamentals from cutting thick pieces of cardboard with a kitchen knife to making beautiful works of art……
“As stencil artists we have a common bond and we know the hardships and struggles that come with the work that we do. The process of cutting stencils can be grueling but at the same time it is extremely difficult to gain respect and admiration for the huge amount of work and dedication that we put in from the art world at large.” -PaperMonster

This past weekend marked 2009’s Raritan River Walk mural event in New Brunswick, NJ. Last year was a really great time and the turnout this year was even bigger. It was great to see everyone coming together and pushing each other to try new things. I want to thank everyone who not only came out to paint but who also stopped by and shared such great words of encouragement. This year I wanted to experiment with some new ways to use the wall and I stumbled upon what I call “black holes.” Hope to make more of these in the future.

Mike Murphy over at Filthism.com (HERE) sent over this great video of me paintings during this years Jersey Fresh Graffiti Jam in Trenton, NJ. He is a very talented film maker with a great eye for documenting graffiti and urban art projects. This video is one of my favorites and you can see the entire process from pasting to the finished stencil. Huge thanks to Mike for all of the hard work.
This morning I stumbled on news of a new Banksy stencil on the streets in Europe and it immediately took me back to pieces that LECKOmio (HERE) had created several months ago. It may or may not be true but I feel that Banksy’s newest creation may be a critique on LECKOmio’s pieces and use of “graffiti slogans.” You be the judge.

I am extremely happy to annouce that the “Friends With Knives” stencil group show @DirtyPilot.com (HERE) is now officially OPEN. Seeing the show, I was immediately impressed by the work that all of the artists put in and the layout of the show is fantastic. You have to see it for yourself. Check out the entire show featuring over 60 stencil art pieces from 15 incredibly talented stencil artists at the following link:
I just got word that you can watch BombIt: The Movie for FREE online over at Babelgum (HERE). It is a fantastic movie covering street art, graffiti, stencil art, and urban art in different locations around the world. I just watched it recently on DVD and it brought me to tears at one point towards the end of the film. It is very inspirational and a great watch whether you see it today at work, at home or this weekend. You can view it online at the following link:
I think a movie should be made about stencil artists. Although I have seen many amazing films covering urban art and graffiti, there has never been one comprehensive take on just stencil art and stencil graffiti. That would make for a fantastic project.
I recently had the great opportunity to sit down and have a “Back Talk” interview with Juxtapoz.com (HERE). Such amazing artists as Insa, Mac, Mike Shinoda, Mike Giant and many more talented artists have conducted “Back Talk” interviews in the past and I am extremely humbled and honored to join the list. How far is that from New Jersey/New York? It is about 10 THOUSAND miles away. If you would like stickers or have pictures of PaperMonster stickers send them over to v@papermonster.org and I will post them!!
Leslie Granda-Hill (HERE) sent over some beautiful photos of lasts weeks panting session in Trenton, NJ. These are by far my favorite photos. In the first picture you can see my technique of using my hand as a paint brush. I use my hands to paint, paste, and spray my stencils on canvas so it is something I feel comfortable doing on a wall, eventhough the washing my hands part is not fun when there is no running water around. For More of Leslie’s Photography visit: http://www.lesliegrandahill.com/

The issue features Lady Gaga on the cover and within the issue you can find Devon Aoki, Yone, Sung Choi, Colette’s Sarah Lerfel, PaperMonster and many more features revolving around art, music and fashion. It is great to see my pieces together and you can even catch a glimpse at some upcoming pieces. Excerpt from the PaperMonster x STATUS Mag Interview titled “DOUBLE IDENTITY”::
“It’s not everyday that you get to see a guy with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences rip up the art scene the way stencil graffiti artist PaperMonster has. ” I admit that it is a massive leap from stencil artist, but at the same time it is very exciting, and I am extremely lucky to be able to do both at the same time. My two lives really melt together at some points and both rely on the exact same thing: Experimenting……”
This month’s PaperMonster’s Favorite Things cover everything that is BIG including giant legs, giant faces, and ever bigger spray paint caps. First on the list comes something that I never thought I would see: A Giant Spray Cap CHAIR (HERE) !! Followed by the chair comes the all new season of Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory Season 2 (HERE) which is sure to pull out all the stops. Gold Coin’s (HERE) new Summer 09 line looks fantastic and one of my favorite pieces from the collection is the “Stick Up” tee which will soon be turned into a vinyl toy. After the tee we see two wonderful artists all about scale and beauty. First we have JR’s beautiful new piece show at Paris’ Emanuel Perrotin Gallery and it is followed by Insa’s most recent art show in collaboration with Nike. These two artists are truly pioneers of their respective genres and every single time I view one of their works I feel the urge to create. Lastly, as more news comes from the new Iron Man 2 movie I ran into this incredible trailer of an Iron Man Anime movie which just blew me away.

PaperMonster will be taking part in several of the events this year including: August 22nd Jersey Fresh Jam, Sept 18th Urban Art Exhibition, and one of my favorite events along with the Jam is the Streets 2K9 event taking place on September 19th 2009.
