As artists we all are fans or look up to certain people/artists as role models or great friends. We obtain inspiration from words, music, and our visual surroundings. Through each painting we learn and grow and feed off each others creativity. Certain people make you want to push further and take your work to that next level not for money or fame and for me Pose2 (Mr. Max Moses) is one of the many artists that has had a major impact on my art and my drive to continue to paint. Check out this fantastic video below on Pose2. He really breaks it down at that 15min mark.

“Word Up?” Show & Tell Gallery’s Group Show featuring artists PaperMonster, Ghost, Dixon, Omen, Skam, and Case opens Friday Jan 9th in collaboration with LE Gallery. The group show starts off 2009 in a great way showcasing new works from each artist. PaperMonster’s new work has grown larger with bolder textures and detail. Each piece explores the harmony between chaos and beauty with titles such as “True Identity” “The Beast Within” and “If He Only Knew” that dive into the secrets and hidden mysteries within women. Negative space and shadows heighten the degree of the unknown. Each stencil art piece allows the audience to interact and actively digest the stories contained in each painting making for a powerful visual experience.
You can catch images and additional information on the group show below::

TheAsianEconomist.com is happy to announce that it has launch it’s interview section and we are very glad to have our first interview be with a rising stencil artist, PaperMonster. You can check out more of his work at his blog: http://papermonster.wordpress.com.PaperMonster will be our feature Artist for our first issue of The Asian Economist Online Magazine, stay tune for the release date of the Magazine.
CHECK OUT MORE HERE:
http://www.theasianeconomist.com/interview-with-papermonster/
The Interview
Why did you choose the name PaperMonster?
The name PaperMonster came from a lot of different parts of my life but one was the huge amount of paper that I consume and the mess that comes with stenciling and later having a final product of a beautiful stencil, but then looking at the area around you and seeing the large amount of tiny paper fragments which are so hard to clean up. The name fits well and at the same time there is this opposition occurring where the name PaperMonster is very strong and you imagine chaos but my work is very focused on beauty and subtleties with loud colors.
When did you start doing stencil and what/who influence you in the beginning?
I started about four years ago doing very ugly stencils at the time when I had little to no skills. I used all of the wrong types of materials and had no concept of negative space. The first stencil involved a cartoon character I used to draw constantly and the second stencil was of my face wearing a respirator mask. The cartoon looked great but my face looked horrible. I would spend days on just one stencil and now I can spend only a couple hours and come out with something incredible. I remember buying my first stencil book “Stencil Graffiti” and it blew my mind. I wanted so desperately to be a famous stencil graffiti artist. Things take time and success does not come over night. I still dream about becoming a famous stencil artist.
Where do you get your ideas for your works?
I get my ideas from real people expressing true beauty. I am inspired……….

It is the beginning of what I hope to be an ongoing project of installed art both permanent and temporary. If you would like to take one of the PaperMonster pieces home you can go in search of them on (Bedford/5thSt, Bowery/Broome, and Spring/Bowery) Check out some pics from the weekend below. Enjoy!!

There are many new shows and projects taking place in these upcoming months. One of them is an exciting group show coming up with DirtyPilot.com with a great list of artist. I will be posting more details as soon as I get more information, but you can check out two of my pieces for the show below. Both pieces were inspired by the upcoming Olympics taking place on 8.8.08. About two summers ago I had the opportunity to visit Beijing and travel through China. It is absolutely beautiful but while there will be a celebration of sporting events there are also many issues within the country as any country which will be overshadowed. These two pieces attempt at speaking to what is going on at a deeper level within the country. Check out more below. (Click on images to view larger)

This is the first time that I have put an actual stencil within a piece. This piece is within a large black frame and the glass is painted while the stencil is floating inside.

Details of larger image.

This is the canvas piece after using the stencil which is held in the frame in the first piece.

More details of the piece.

Two beautiful packages came in the mail yesterday. One, the highly anticipated
Stencil Nation Book by Russell Howze (
www.stencilnation.org.) The second package involves a very exciting show coming up fro Art Whino in a couple of months. You can catch a hint towards the end of the post. Now back to talking about Stencil Nation!!
The book is purely and simply one word: PHENOMENAL
It truly captures the roots as well as present/future state of stencil art. In it you will find photos and commentary covering topics/artist throughout the world. The book covers it all from the most simple yet powerful stencils from people just inspired to leave a message, to the most dedicate artists in the world exploring the possibilities of beauty behind stencil art. There is a remarkable Chronology of stencil art history as well as a section purely dedicated to shedding light into the best tips for any artist who is looking to explore and have a hands-on approach to stencil art. I highly suggest you pick up a copy. Bookstores in NYC have already sold out of the book (I have the best sources aka Ren.) Make sure to visit
www.stencilnation.org and pick up a copy or visit your local bookstore. If they don’t have it, take a piece of paper and write the name as big as possible for them so they can order it!! A huge thanks to Russell Howze for truly putting a incredible piece of art together. Thank you. Check out some of the appearances by PaperMonster in the book below. Amazing!!
Fantastic cover and great size. There is a slight hint of an upcoming sticker design. What could it be?
This is in the stencil cut-outs section. Fantastic.
Stenciling tips by PaperMonster and several other artist.
TAGUR??? What could this new project be about??? Stay posted!!

Literally turning the idea of a gallery inside out, Electric Windows will house 24 pieces approximately 8’ x 12’, on the large industrial windows of the factory for 12 months!
Electric Windows will feature work from 24 different artists, including: Above, Cycle, Daryll Peirce, Lady Pink, Peat Wollaeger, Ripo, Ron English, The Love Movement, Tes One, Ultra, and UPSO, among others. See the full line-up and get more info at www.electricwindowsbeacon.com.

April 12, 1961 Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin embarked on the historic first manned space flight. Twenty years later on 12 April 1981, the US launched the first space shuttle flight. We think that’s something worth celebrating! Every year on April 12th Yuri’s Night parties are held all around the world; it’s like the St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo for space.
Join us for an OUT OF THIS WORLD experience. Dress yourself in your best celestial attire (prizes awarded). See an art exhibition of other-worldly magnitude. Enjoy space-themed libations by Stoli Vodka. Experience heavenly bodies through cosmic burlesque performances. Space out with a Russian-style, post-punk band. Enjoy, and temporarily elevate yourself from an earthly existence.
Featuring space-themed artwork by: Alan Defibaugh, Arabella Proffer-Vendetta, Bryan C, Brandi Read, Chris Bishop, Jared Davis, Jason Snyder, Julie Steiner, Olivier Defaye, Papermonster, Scott G Brooks, Sean Welker, Shawn Huddleston, and Todd Gardner.

I recently had a gallery opening for a group show at Art Whino (artwhino.com) in Alexandria, Va over the weekend. It was amazing. I was able to meet a ton of great people and I was extremely surprised at the ridiculous turn out of people. The actual gallery itself is massive with at everywhere from the hallways to the bathrooms. It is very impressive and so professional. The staff at Art Whino and the owners have done a great job and have brought an incredible art scene to that area. I gave out PaperMonster stickers the entire night and everyone had a great time. The gallery even had a live painting session feat J. Coleman. The solo show room was also massive. As you can see above, there is a video of the opening that I put together from the group show. I didn’t have a chance to get footage of all the artist in the show but it gives you a good taste of what to expect. Be sure to check out the show if your are in the area or view images of works in the show at artwhino.com. Thank you to everyone who can and showed some love, and stay posted for news on upcoming projects and shows!!!

Art Whino banners everywhere!! They run the city!!
These were the paintings from PaperMonster that were in the show.
It was really nice to see a good number of people excited about all of the forms of art on display.
Had a great chat with Gabriel Pons from (ponshoptstudio.com)

Adam Russell was in the house with his family. Very talented. Find him at (myspace.com/sage_lion)
I met JAZI for the first time. He has an incredible personality and his range of work is sick!! Catch him at (jazirock.com)

When you get that Art Whino name tag..BAMN you are Official. PaperMonster
A shot of the live painting by J. Coleman. It was so loud you could feel the floor vibrate. Amazing.

People really gravitated to Whirlwind on the left. I think it was the stickers!!
Peter from sbtpllc.com brought a strong number of people to the show. I hope they had a nice time. It was great meeting them.

Nike ID PaperMonster Dunks High and PaperMonster Stickers!!??? Thats how we ride.
